I've been an independent editor and proofreader for the past seven years,working with writers wherever they need help--grammar, mechanics, style, flow, The Big Picture. Before going freelance, I taught college English and humanities for many years, and served as the director of the college writing center.
Editing experience includes academic, general nonfiction, business, personal, and scientific and technical writing. I've worked with a number of different style guides, including APA, MLA, CSE, and Chicago. I'll use whichever style guide you prefer.
My job as an editor is to make sure you look your best on paper--or, often these days, on screen. To that end, I offer these services
:
Proofreading:Fix errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, usage; check for consistency in details like formatting, capitalization, use of numbers, spelling and hyphenation.
Copyediting:Includes proofreading plus editing to improve clarity, logic, readability; suggestions for improvements in focus, flow, support for ideas.
Substantive editing: Everything under proofreading and copyediting plus rewriting where needed and suggestions for large-scale changes in overall organization and the arrangement of information and ideas, support for claims, and help with formatting.
It's all done via e-mail. For Word documents I use Track Changes, which allows you to see my edits and either accept or reject them. You get two copies of the edited document, one showing edits and the other a clean copy with all edits included.
Price.
All services are $30/hour. For proofreading, I average about 2,000 words per hour, which works out to around $4.00 per page (250 words). For copyediting and substantive, how much I do per hour depends on the amount of editing needed, which can vary wildly, but usually works out to $5-$8 per page. I'd be glad to give an estimate based on a sample of your work. Payment is through PayPal or by special arrangement.
