The department of Public Safety is looking for a Police Captain. This position will report to the Assistant Police Chief and will support the University's mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all other activities.
Essential Function:/h1:
Under general supervision from a designated administrator, assist in the planning and direction of daily police operations, including Intelligence:Led Policing, Community Policing, Community Engagement and Partnerships, Patrol Functions, Crime Prevention, Investigations, Emergency Preparedness, Business Continuity, Public Safety, Special Events, Communications, Records, and Training.
Knowledge of::/h1:
:Modern law enforcement and crime prevention principals, practices and methods
:Campus regulations, Ohio law; especially criminal statutes of the Ohio Revised Code, and applicable provisions of the US Constitution pertinent to an individuals' constitutional rights
:Contents and provisions of the UCPD Policies and Procedure Manuals
:Disciplinary procedures, union contracts (for sworn and civilian personnel), and the University HR policies and procedures
:Current literature to keep abreast of latest law enforcement techniques and equipment
:Principles and practices involved in coaching, mentoring, development and training
:SARA problem solving model, and other data:driven strategies
:Written and verbal communication with the University community includingClery Act, Title IX and other administrative notifications related to campus health andsafety
:Patrol functions duties and responsibilities of sworn and civilian personnel
:Legal and organizational requirements and obligations pertaining to mutual aid agreements
Responsibilities:
:Assume the duties as the Acting Assistant Police Chief when directed to do so
:Serve as a liaison between UCPD and contracted police agencies for mainand branchcampuses
:Daily operations for the public safety department to includeoverseeing patrol and support functions, investigations, policy development andreview, procedures dealing with emergency operations, and the review of data to assist in the determination ofcriminal activities and trends, resolution of personnel issues, staffing and deployment metrics.
:Supervise fairly and objectively, including the skill and ability to: give praise and compliments for good work, recognize strengths and weaknesses of personnel, listen and counsel subordinates with regard to their performance related problems, maintain discipline fairly and properly, give orders effectively, delegate, evaluate subordinates fairly and objectively, and to enforce departmental rules and policies
:Provide regular briefings to the Assistant Police Chief
:Assign duties to supervisors
:Oversee training programs for sworn and civilianpersonnel, for and with campus and community groups and other law enforcement agencies that enhancethe understanding and delivery of policeservices; to include community policing, customer service, implicit bias, fair and impartial policing, and diversity and inclusion.
:Represent the Department of Public Safety by attending professional, community and campusmeetings to fully engage those entities in data:driven strategies
:Evaluate new technology for the enhancement of security and protective systems.
:Work collaboratively with the Office of Safety and Reform and their Community Advisory Council, to implement recommendations from a comprehensiv
